Corrillos is an initiative of David Maroto and Marjolijn Dijkman, supported by TENT. It is a series of presentations by and for Rotterdam-based artists, designers, architects, curators and theoreticians. The Corrillos meetings started in September 2008, and take place more or less monthly.
The third Corrillos took place on 16th December. Hosted by artist and designer Christien Meindertsma. She invited two guests to present their work to an audience: Artist Florentijn Hofman and photographer Reineke Otten. Dinner was courtesy of Rode Kapje.
Apart from a platform where to update on different and current practices, disciplines and understandings of Rotterdam art manifestations, Corrillos functions also as a referential meeting point. Those who stay mostly away in order to carry out their projects, have here a place where to meet fellow artists in a relaxed ambience where food and music contribute to create actual “corrillos” before and after the presentations.
The work of Florentijn Hofman defies the everyday experience with unusual and striking works of art. They make a huge impact in the space due to its formidable scale. The location forms the starting point for his temporary objects and paintings, such as a bright yellow inflatable rubber duck, almost thirty meters tall, which creates a playful interaction with the surroundings.
In the project World Skin Colors, Reineke Otten maps the distribution of skin colours across the globe. As streetologist she examines the urban environment and uses the street and people as a source of inspiration. In 2006 she published her book China Daily Life with photos of everyday life in an environment that is rapidly developing.
Corrillos are by invitation only: a limited number of interested guests are invited per meeting.
